CMIS (Content Management Interoperability Services)

The CMIS specification is intended as a means to standardize a Web services interface specification that will enable greater interoperability of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) systems. CMIS uses Web services and Web 2.0 interfaces to enable rich information to be shared across Internet protocols in vendor-neutral formats, among document systems, publishers and repositories, within one enterprise and between companies.

Most organizations employ multiple content management systems supporting individual applications. This generally results disparate and usually incompatible systems existing side by side. Nowadays the focus rightfully has shifted to content applications that can utilize, and integrate content from multiple content management systems in order to provide end user solutions as part of a Portal, CRM system or Office application.

In November 2008, the CMIS committee was established by OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) in order to advance the proposed standard.

On May 04, 2010, OASIS announced that members had voted to approve the Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) Version 1.0 specification as an OASIS Standard. Contributing sponsor members included Adobe, Alfresco, ASG, Booz Allen Hamilton, Day Software, EMC, IBM, Liferay, Microsoft, O3Spaces, Open Text, Oracle, SAP, and others.
